Piano Lessons Near Catshill, Bromsgrove, Lickey and Barnt Green

Are you looking for a highly qualified piano teacher in Bromsgrove, Rubery, Lickey or Barnt Green? I can help you achieve your musical goals with piano lessons in a purpose built studio. I also have students worldwide who learn piano online via live video calls. Still, after 25  years of delivering private and school tuition,  the piano and keyboard are still the most popular instrument to learn. Children can start their piano lessons as young as 4 years old. At this age the focus is on engagement and fun with a combination of musical games and piano playing rather than more formal tuition. Of course, starting at  a young age is ideal but I welcome piano students of all ages. Many of my learners are returning adults who had lessons when they were younger but also complete beginners. It is never to late to learn.

Your New Piano Teacher…

“My father began teaching me the organ at 5 years old and I later progressed to the trombone and classical piano lessons reaching grade 8.  I continued my classical studies to complete the ALCM teaching diploma in 1997 with the London College of Music. Falling in love with jazz music and keyboardists like Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock and Greg Phillinganes I started gigging in local jazz clubs and a leading Midlands Big Band touring across the UK and Europe. Amongst the the highlights were the Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club and the North Sea Jazz Festival in the Netherlands. I particularly enjoyed performing in the UK’s leading Queen and Toto tribute bands and have played everything from pop, soul and funk to  classic rock and heavy metal!

On completing a music degree, BMus (hons), and PGCE in 2000 I began teaching music in secondary and primary schools delivering KS1-3 classroom music, GCSE music, Level 2 and 3 Rockschool diplomas, music technology and A level music. I also hold a current enhanced DBS. Teaching music is my passion and nothing gives me greater pleasure than sharing in the first steps of others embarking on their own lifelong musical journey.”

Childrens’ and Adults’ Piano Lessons in Catshill

Whether you are learning just for fun or working towards a specific musical goaI,  I offer both individual and group lessons. . I have a great deal of experience in teaching students with special educational needs; dyslexia; ADHD; ASD and visually impaired. For youngsters and beginners, 30 minute piano lessons are long enough to learn new material without being overloaded. For students who choose to work towards examinations 60 minute lessons are often more beneficial.

Learn for fun! There is no pressure to complete exams. Many piano students just want to learn pop, rock, jazz or classical music for fun. I even teach keyboards to those who play in covers bands too.

Some students like to follow a more formal path and complete piano or keyboard exams. There is a great sense of achievement in working your way through grades 1-8. For some students a clear learning pathway is essential in maintaining focus and exam certificatiion may be needed for future music college and university applications. I offer a variety of  piano and keyboard syllabuses including ABRSM, the ever popular RockSchool grades, Trinity and Victoria College.

GROUP PIANO LESSONS ONLINE

Live group lessons are delivered via Zoom or Google meet in English, wherever in the World you live. Having delivered secondary school music lessons online to groups of 30 students I am experienced in remote teaching. Online piano lessons are perfect where your travelling time is restricted or you are unable to find a suitable piano teacher locally.

Group piano lessons are wonderful for building self confidence and meeting with supportive like minded students. This course is for absolute beginners with no previous musical experience. You’ll learn the foundational piano techniques, basic music reading skills, hand coordination, basic theory, and a repertoire of simple pieces, building a solid foundation for further piano study. You wil learn from my demonstrations, group playing and individual practise tasks. Group sessions typically have 3 to 6 students in each 60 minute lesson with sessions taking place after school on weekdays and also on weekends.

I"M AN ADULT. CAN YOU TEACH ME HOW TO PLAY PIANO?

Absolutely! It is never to late to learn or return back to where you left off. I teach complete beginners with no musical experience and have you playing in no time at all! Whether it is for fun or to complete grades I will plan a course of lessons just for you. Lessons are always relaxed and fun and taught from my purpose built studio in Bromsgrove. My schedule is flexible so will do best to accomodate piano lessons around your hours of work, shift patterns or childcare commitments.

HOW MUCH PIANO PRACTICE SHOULD I DO?

Practice for as long as you can concentrate! Some of my students practice 5 minutes a day, some  practice for 2 hours or more daily. Read my article on how to learn a new piece of music here…

For youngsters and pre grade 1 piano students little and often. 5-10mins each day is more than adequate. My parents often find that if they keep it fun little ones will often practise for much longer anyway. It’s not just about practicing lesson pieces either. Its important just to explore the piano, make new sounds, play some chords, improvise tunes. This is as valuable as working on your piano lesson material.

I recommend that my adult learners practice 20 minutes daily. This is often managble and fits around even the busiest of schedules. As long as you ensure that your practise session is focused and undisturbed you will make good progress. Little and often is best to maintain what you have learnt. If you start making lots of mistakes and become tired come back to it the next day

For those students working towards examinations, 30 minutes daily for lower grades and up to an hour for the higher grades is reasonable.

HOW OFTEN DO I NEED TO HAVE A PIANO LESSON?

I reccommend a weekly piano lesson to make steady, continuous progress. Beginners tend to have 30 minute lessons and those working towards specific piano or theory exams may have a 60 minute lesson to ensure we can cover all the necessary material. Lessons are either face to face in my Bromsgrove piano studio or online.

DO YOU TEACH MUSIC THEORY? WHAT ABOUT GCSE, BTEC and A-LEVEL TUITION?

Music theory is part of every piano lesson and it is always fun and engaging. We will learn basic musical notation and note values alongside scales, chords and harmony as we go along. If theory isn’t your ‘thing’ I can also teach you how to play be ear but even this requires some theoretical knowledge.

For students interested in completing theory exams I offer theory only lessons to ensure you pass with flying colours! In some cases you will need to pass grade 5 theory in order to progress to the grade 6 practical exam.

I also offer GCSE and A-Level  music composing, performing and listening support as well as music production lessons for level 2 and 3 courses using the latest music production software.

DO YOU TEACH FACE-TO-FACE OR ONLINE?

Both!

Face-to-face piano lessons are taught in my purpose built studio in Bromsgrove. I teach on an acoustic piano but also have a range of keyboards and synthesisers that we use too. I have a digital recording studio running Cubase Pro for those wanting to pursue lessons in music production.

I also offer online lessons if you are unable to travel to me so you can have a professional piano teacher in the comfort of your home whereever you are in the World! Online lessons are either individual or in group of up to 6 students at a time. These are taught via Zoom, Google Meet or WhatsApp.

HOW CAN I ENCOURAGE MY CHILD TO PRACTICE AT HOME?

I have written an article about how parents and carers can support piano practice at home. Read it here.

I will share the best ways to practice at home in our piano lessons together. I always encourage parents to participate in the lesson with younger children so they can help little ones understand what to practice at home each week. All students  have acces to my online portal which has a range of videos, backing tracks and resources to make learning the piano even more engaging and fun at home.

Children love routines, even if they don’t know it! Set aside the same time each day for regular practice. 5-10 minutes for young children should be enough to revise what was learnt in the last lesson. Aim towards 20 30 minutes from about 10 years old. Don’t forget to have fun and explore the piano too! A lot can be learnt from just letting your fingers play whatever they want to! It doesn’t matter what it sounds like to anyone but you. Explore chords, improvise tunes, play lesson pieces with different rhythms and sing along too.

Piano Teacher Testimonials…

Adam is an amazing teacher. He is very patient and makes me feel comfortable, which is really important to me. As an adult learner with two young children at home I was looking for something where I could focus on myself and piano music at least for the duration of the class. I love that he never pushes or complains when I don’t do much practice at home 🙂 I enjoy every class, learning from the book or playing pop songs. He has lots of equipment in his studio and occasionally, when I don’t have babysitter I’ll bring kids and he shows them different instruments and how they play 🙂 I hope one day one of my sons will start going to learn piano with him too! He is a very nice and kind person, easy to communicate with and I couldn’t recommend him highly enough!

Adam has been teaching piano to our daughter for just over 12 months and she absolutely loves it. He is very patient and clearly loves what he does. It is so lovely listening to her play and she has now performed at aschool assembly. Thank you for the support.

Adam is an excellent teacher who knows how to get the best out of his students. He is very encouraging and teaches to a very high standard.

Emma Jones

Parent

Learning to play the piano has always been my retirement plan. Adam discussed what I wanted to achieve and how he could help me achieve these goals. Each lesson is well structured and a target set for each week. This has really helped motivate me and track my progress. Adam is very patient and encouraging and the journey has been life changing. I never thought I would have the confidence to learn at my age!
